Hickson 68 (with NGC 5371)

Hickson 68 and NGC 5371

The galaxy cluster consists of NGC 5350, 5353, 5354, 5355, and 5358. NGC 5371 is also in the image, the most prominent galaxy showing its spiral arms, but it is not technically a member of Hickson 68.

On June 17th, I got an e-mail from one Robin S. in the UK.  He had taken an image of Hickson 68 the previous night and had noticed an extraneous object in his field.  Thinking it could have been a comet or minor planet, he did a Google search, and found my image.  I searched my image very carefully (and even reprocessed it a couple times) but found no trace of this object.  According to Robin, if it was in my image, it was probably right in front (on top) of one of those galaxies, and thus hidden in its glare.  I wish I could have been more help, and perhaps shared in the discovery of a new object; however, it was great to be a small part of a serious scientific effort.
