M81 and M82

This galaxy field in Ursa Major contains two very bright Messier galaxies: the beautiful spiral M81 and its active-core neighbour M82. The other bright galaxy in the field is NGC 3077. To the left of M81 is one of its satellites, the faint dwarf galaxy Holmberg IX. Several other faint galaxies are also seen if you look closely in this rich field.

Also faintly visible in this field is the integrated flux nebula, which is what is causing the subtle unevenness of the background. See the Mandel-Wilson Unexplored Nebula Project at www.galaxyimages.com/UNP_IFNebula.html for more info about this.
